Do I Need Two Copies of ‘It Takes Two’ to Play with a Friend?

Here’s how the Friend’s Pass works — so you won’t have to buy it twice.

It Takes Two is one of those rare co-op games that’s built entirely around playing with someone else — whether that’s a friend, partner, or even a random buddy online. But with that kind of setup, it’s fair to wonder: Do both players need to own a copy?

The good news? No, you don’t need two copies to play together.

Hazelight Studios designed It Takes Two with something called the Friend’s Pass. Here’s how it works:

  • Only one player needs to own the full game — digital or physical.
  • The second player simply downloads the free Friend’s Pass version on their platform (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch).
  • Once that’s done, the player with the full game sends an invite, and you’re both ready to dive into the adventure — start to finish.

It’s a simple system that makes it way easier (and cheaper) to play with someone, especially since the game can only be played in co-op. Whether you’re sitting on the couch together or playing online, the Friend’s Pass covers you.

One important note: Both players need to be on the same platform family â€” meaning if you’re on PS5, your friend needs to be on PlayStation too. It Takes Two does not support cross-platform play.

TL;DR:

  • Only one full copy of It Takes Two is required.
  • Friend downloads the free Friend’s Pass.
  • Play together online or local.
  • No cross-platform play — stay on the same system.

So, no need to double up — just grab a copy, invite your co-op partner, and get ready for one of the best co-op experiences out there.
