Do You Need Two Copies of It Takes Two? No, Here’s How to Play for Free

Do you need two copies of It Takes Two to play with a friend? It’s one of the best co-op games ever made, but since it’s built entirely around playing with someone else, that’s a fair question.

The short answer: no, you don’t.

Hazelight Studios built something called the Friend’s Pass into It Takes Two, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. One player buys the full game. The other downloads the Friend’s Pass for free on their platform and joins through an invite. That’s it, and both players get access to the entire game from start to finish, no second purchase required.

How to Set It Up

The process is straightforward. The player who owns the full copy launches the game and sends an invite to their friend. The friend downloads the Friend’s Pass (completely free on PC via Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch), accepts the invite, and you’re both in. The Friend’s Pass isn’t a demo either. Your friend gets the full experience, every chapter, all the way to the credits.

Does It Work Online and Local Co-op?

Yes to both. You can play together on the same couch using local co-op, or connect online from different locations. The Friend’s Pass works for either setup.

One Thing to Know: No Cross-Platform Play

Here’s the important catch. It Takes Two does not support cross-platform multiplayer. If you own the game on PS5, your friend needs to be on PlayStation too, either PS4 or PS5. Same deal for Xbox and PC (Steam). You can’t play across platforms, so just make sure you and your friend are on the same system family before you start.

Does the Second Player Need an Account?

Yes, your co-op partner will need an account on whichever platform you’re playing on, a Steam account for PC, a PSN account for PlayStation, and so on. The Friend’s Pass is tied to the platform, not just the game.

Quick Summary

  • Only one full copy of It Takes Two is needed
  • Second player downloads the Friend’s Pass for free
  • Works for both online and local co-op
  • No cross-platform play, both players need to be on the same platform family
  • Second player needs a platform account to use the Friend’s Pass

If you’ve been putting off playing It Takes Two because you weren’t sure about the cost, now you know. One copy between two people is all it takes. Go drag a friend into it. They’ll thank you by chapter two and then absolutely blame you by chapter five.
