Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City is the latest instalment in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk universe, giving newcomers and Night Citizens alike a chance to delve into the world of Night City’s favourite mercs as they pursue new adventures.
Cyberpunk 2077 – A comeback story for the ages
When it was first announced in 2019, Cyberpunk 2077 was set to be a cultural phenomenon, amassing approximately eight million preorders in anticipation of its 2020 release. Unfortunately, its rough launch meant the game was met with heavy controversy and was criticised by players on all consoles for its borderline unplayability. Â
Since its launch debacle, however, CD Projekt Red has worked hard to win back the respect of its disheartened players and gone on to release the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series on Netflix, which became one of the streaming platform’s highest-rated shows of all time. More importantly, Cyberpunk 2077 underwent an extreme makeover with its 2.0 Patch Update, which had almost completely eradicated bugs and overhauled lacklustre systems such as the Character Perk Tree. This patch update was shortly followed by the release of the game’s expansion pack Phantom Liberty. The devs’ efforts for redemption paid off immensely, as Cyberpunk 2077 went on to win a Game and BAFTA Gaming award for best-developing game.
Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City
The studio released a teaser trailer earlier this year in March to officially announce the release of the tabletop board game. Its crowdfunding campaign for this game went live in September and acquired $2.7 million of pledges after only ten minutes, exceeding their initial goal of $100,000 by an unmissable large margin. Â
A ‘What If?’ Storyline
Players of up to 4 can follow the story of our beloved protagonist V and their partner in crime Jackie Wells, where they indulge in a life of crime never in which they never go through with the iconic Konpeki Plaza heist. Other notable figures from the game such as Panam Palmer and Judy Alvarez will be majorly factored into the storylines also, and cameos from the Edegrunners series can also be anticipated. Â
Features
The game includes 13 missions, 50 street stories and an Afterlife mission generator so you never feel as though you are playing out the same game twice. The box itself will include a physical map of Night City in addition to an Edgerunners Mission Kit, a pamphlet explaining Night City’s rich history for players with no prior knowledge of the game. This tabletop will also introduce an assistant app that will be used to time a player’s turn and thus will recreate the intense, fast-paced atmosphere that is characteristic of the Cyberpunk 2077 experience. Â
The board game is slated for release in December 2025 but is currently available for preorder from major retailers such as Amazon, Zatu and Firestorm Games.Â
