Iconic Disney characters appear everywhere in pop culture, from Disneyland parks to Kingdom Hearts crossover action role-playing games. You’re never too far away from Disney, even if it’s when you’re watching their television network, Disney Plus. Since August of last year, a team-up between Walt Disney’s company and Ravensburger, a German industry leader in puzzles and toys, has produced a card game by designers Ryan Miller and Steve Warner that features numerous memorable characters from Walt Disney Pictures.
What is Disney Lorcana?
Lorcana is a TCG similar in design to its predecessors Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon. It offers a simple system for both younger and older audiences to play and experience, as well as some fantastic art. When looking at the game cards, you immediately notice highly imaginative and detailed reinterpretations of well-known Disney favourites such as Aladdin, Hercules, and Ariel.
In the story of Lorcana, you play an ‘Illumineer’, wielding magical ink to summon unique versions of Disney characters and items known as ‘glimmers’. These glimmers are represented by character cards and item cards placed on the field. There are also classic Disney ‘song’ cards which seem to be spells with unique effects based on famous Disney musical numbers. The goal of the game is to gather enough lore to achieve victory.
Disney Lorcana’s back catalogue
Lorcana started by releasing its first set ‘The First Chapter’ in late August and then began work on their next set ‘Rise of the Floodborn’, this set introduced Pinnochio and Jungle Book characters.
In 2024, we have seen additional Lorcana releases, including ‘Into the Inklands’, which brings in DuckTales, TaleSpin, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet cards and introduces the Location card type.
They also have during the summer had the release of Ursula’s Return which gives access to ‘Alternate shift’ mechanics, which allows a card to be played by discarding a card type from your hand instead of paying the cost of a card from your inkwell. Usually, you need to pay for a card with enough ink cards you have stored in your inkwell to cast it.
Shimmering Skies
Shimmering Skies appears to be the fifth main set in the Lorcana card game, as each expansion set has done before it Shimmering Skies will give a first appearance to Wreck-It Ralph and other characters.
The next expansion set remains largely unknown but fans look forward to the potential of Toy Story, Nightmare Before Christmas, Pirates of the Caribbean and even Kingdom Hearts characters being added as related entries to the growing trading card game.
