Hapunan is a story-driven psychological horror game built around urban poverty and Philippine folklore, and you play Niko, a teenager whose family is two months behind on rent and facing eviction by a ruthless landlord. To keep your home, you and your father head out onto the midnight streets of Barangay Sak Dudol to earn whatever cash you can.

Past a wooden sign beside a lamppost that points toward Barangay SakDudol Main, the streets are empty enough that you hear a vendor’s call of “Baluuuut!” long before you see anyone. Balut, a boiled duck egg, is one of the most popular street foods in the Philippines at night, eaten by cracking a small hole at the top, sipping the warm broth, and seasoning the rest with salt and spicy vinegar. The customers you meet out here are unpredictable, and the game builds its dread out of walking those desolate midnight streets.
As the debt and the danger grow, you and your father run into the name Penduko, which people across the alleys only whisper. Finding out who Penduko really is means uncovering the secrets hiding behind the balut trade.

Along the way you face high-stakes moral dilemmas, and your choices shape Niko’s morality, change your relationships with other characters, and send the story down different branches toward its ending.
The horror on the streets of Barangay Sak Dudol comes from Filipino urban legends and folklore, and the game keeps them close to everyday Filipino life, from a vendor’s call in the night to the way balut is eaten. If you want to find out what the secrets of the balut are, Hapunan is out now on Steam.
